About the Poem

A parody of the nursery rhyme The was an old woman who lived in a shoe which takes a rather unsubtle sideswipe at 'benefit Britain'. Many nursery rhymes were written as political satire, bringing us full circle.

Painless Labour

There was an old woman who lived in shoe.
She had eleven children, but considered it too few.
What with child benefit, tax credits and the minimum income guarantee,
She decided to up the ante and adopt a further three.
